St. John UCC’s First Ministry Fair
What is a Ministry Fair? A ministry fair is an opportunity for the ministries of St. John St Charles to show what they do throughout the year by having a table with pictures, brochures, videos, PowerPoint presentations, etc. There will be sign-up opportunities for people to sign up to join a committee or area of ministry. This will also be the opportunity for children and youth to sign up for Wednesday night activities as well. So join them on Sundays, August 24 and 31, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (noon) in new and old fellowship halls at St. John on Fifth Street in St. Charles.

Shannondale Clothing Drive
St. John UCC located at 405 South Fifth Street in St. Charles will be having their annual clothing drive for Shannondale on September 7 through September 14.  7.  Heifer International Information up-date

August 4, 2008

Heifer International Matching Grant Funding Complete

Each year staff from Heifer International choose one domestic and one international project to promote and support through the Festival of Sharing. This year the international project selected is the East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) project, a $2.5 million matching grant fund. However staff from Heifer International announced on July 8th that funding for the match is complete.

Gifts toward the grant greatly exceeded the expectations of Heifer staff. It was predicted that funding would not be complete until January, 2009. Cash gifts designated for the EADD project will still go to that project site but will no longer be matched.

The EADD project, spread across Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya will bring life-giving changes to the farmers in these countries by improving their diet and by providing a means of earning income. Gifts to this project will increase the number and improve the quality of dairy herds and will provide funding for micro loans to local farmers for milk processing plants and more. The matching grant promoted through the Festival was part of the $42.8 million gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Contributions to the domestic Heifer project located in Holmes County, Mississippi are also still needed. Donations of heifers or the cash to purchase them will help farmers in this impoverished part of our country by providing diversity in their farm products and by creating high quality marketable and locally grown farm products. Our gifts will help these families move from lives of poverty to lives of self-sufficiency.

For further information, please see the Festival of Sharing booklet or contact Carol Oliver at oliver@umocm.com  or at 573-474-7155. Please call the office before September 10th if you have a heifer to donate or are donating cash for the purchase of a heifer.

This trip would be co-led by Dr. Eleazxar Fernandez, professor of Constructive Theology at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and Rev. Aitkens, who has traveled to the Philippines on four different occasions and co-led the trip in 2004. If you have an interest, but will be unable to attend, please e-mail Karen at pk@bethelucckc.org  or Dale Parson at fdparson@sbcglobal.net  After discerning interest throughout the conference, we will determine dates for future presentations.

15. Meet your Global Ministries missionaries

August 7, 2008

Dear Members of Disciples and UCC congregations in the greater St. Louis Area:

Excitement is rising! UCC and Disciples members of the greater St. Louis area are about to meet our new Global Ministries partners. Patrick and Kimberly Bentrott have been commissioned by our joint Global Ministries Board and have received their assignment to serve in Haiti. An ecumenical coalition of churches in Haiti is trying to respond to the desperate needs of the people of this extremely poverty ridden country. Crime, terror and natural disasters have weakened the already fragile nature of the country. Patrick – who is a pastor - will work in helping train pastors and lay leaders. Kimberly – who is a physician - will work in helping train health agents in local congregations.

Disciples and UCC members of SEGA and St. Louis Association (UCC) are invited to meet the Bentrotts when they visit St. Louis on Sunday, September 14th. That afternoon at Webster Groves Christian Church – at 2:30 pm – we will hear them, be able to ask questions of them, and hopefully find ways we might encourage and support them as they move into their ministry in Haiti.

Our New Missionary Initiative is progressing well toward the goal of raising $50,000 in 2008 for support. On August 6th we had $34,360.10 in pledges or gifts received. UCC Churches who have made commitments thus far include:
St. John’s Evangelical, St. Louis
St. Peter’s UCC, Ferguson
St. John’s UCC, Manchester
St. Paul’s UCC, St. Louis
Additionally, we have gifts pledged from the Rev. Shari Maddox, Rev. Ed and Mary Heininger, and the St. Louis Association.

Some of the ways congregations have fund-raised for this over-and-above project include tithing of the economic stimulus checks, bake sales, youth fund-raisers, men’s breakfasts, special offerings in worship and bike-a-thons. It is not too late to be involved! Please send pledges and/or make checks to GLOBAL MINISTRIES and mail them to Union Avenue Christian Church, 733 Union Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108. They will be recorded and sent with other checks to our Global Ministries office in Indianapolis.

Please join us for an informational meeting and a "get acquainted" rehearsal Tuesday, September 9, 7:00 PM, at Bethesda Dilworth, 9645 Big Bend Blvd., 63122. 35. September Parish Paper

August 22, 2008

As is our new practice, I am sending you the September issue of The Parish Paper, a two page newsletter edited by Herb Miller, Lyle Schaller, and Cynthia Woolever. Each edition will discuss issues, share ideas, or offer insights on an area of parish ministry. The September issue discusses: “The Change Agents Check List.”

Didn’t get the previous issues? Don’t know what The Parish Paper is? Here is a little history from Jeff Whitman, Conference Minister: “The mission statement of the Missouri Mid-South Conference calls us as covenant partners to “Strengthening local congregational life for the building up of the whole body of Christ and doing the good works of ministry.” There are a variety of ways that are fulfilling this call in our conference such as Our Church Vitality Initiative, our Growing Ministry Grants, and the work of our Associate Conference Ministers with Pastors, congregations and local pastoral search committees. All of these ministries are made possible through your gifts to Our Churches Wider Mission (OCWM). To that list I am pleased to announce a new program to strengthen and support the work of local congregations – the Parish Paper.”

How you will receive the Parish Paper: The September issue is attached to this email as a PDF. Some of you will get it, and some will not have anything attached because your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has blocked this attachment. Therefore, the Parish Paper is also available for you on the Conference Website www.mmsucc.org  Just look for the link to Communications, and the drop down menu will offer Parish Paper as an option. We will post future editions of the Parish Paper on the website as we get them.

Below are some additional instructions on the use of The Parish Paper:

Our organization's purchase of photocopy rights for The Parish Paper INCLUDES:
1. Permission to provide copies to our staff and the congregations within our constituency in any of the following ways: E-mail, U.S. Mail, newspaper, meetings, training events, and our Website.

2. Permission for each congregation within our constituency to (a) photocopy or electronically distribute for local use as many copies as it needs, (b) post them on its Website, and (c) quote sentences and paragraphs.

Your Congregation does NOT have permission (a) to delete the copyright notice on page 2; (b) to re-write, paraphrase, or change the wording of sentences and paragraphs; or (c) to give ANY THIRD PARTY - other than your staff and constituents - permission to photocopy or reprint (in any quantity, no matter how small, whether for free distribution or for sale).

If your congregation uses a U.S. Post Office Nonprofit Mailing Permit to distribute photocopies with its newsletter or other mailings, most local Post Offices require that every item carry your congregation's name and address. Above The Parish Paper masthead, type your congregation's name, address, and "Photocopied by Permission."
