We will post future editions of the Parish Paper on the website as we get them.

35. Philippine Immersion trip planned

November 24, 2008

What is an immersion trip? The Philippine Immersion trip is a response to the need of forming individuals who are fully aware of our global connedtedness and who are committed in helping give birth to a more just, equitable, colorful and sustainable tomorrow. Our need for individuals and institutions with this kind of global sensibility has become more acute in our highly globalized world. In this immersion trip participants will have the opportunity to study the Philippine context, live with the Filipino people, listen to thier stories, learn about people's movements, share their faith and hopes, engage in dialogue on global issues and explore ways of global solidarity.

The dates are June 10-25. The cost is $2799.00. The trip will be co-lead by Dr. Eleazar Fernandez, Professor of Constructive Theology at UTS and Rev. Karen J. Aitkens, pastor at Bethel United Church of Christ in Kansas City. Although a payment schedule has been suggested, which starts with a December payment of $150, you can add that to the second payment due Jan. 30, 2009 which is $700, the suggested Feb. payment is $950 and final payment due on March 30 of $999. You could make the bulk of the payment the end of March if necessary, however, please have substantial partial payment completed by Jan. 30 so we can determine the number of participants by that time.

If your church would like a brochure about the trip, please contact Dr. Fernandez at fernandez@unitedseminary.edu  or Rev. Aitkens at pk@bethelucckc.org

Karen Aitkens says: “I have experienced four previous trips to the Philippines and have come back with new understandings of poverty and injustice. Our global brothers and sisters live their faith and share love and hospitality under the most oppressive conditions and we experience transformation by being in community with them, bringing back a new understanding of what it is to learn globally and act locally.”

He establishes nonprofit organizations (including foundations for church-related purposes), obtains Internal Revenue Service recognition of tax-exempt status, and advises churches and other nonprofit organizations on tax and employee-benefit matters and governance and liability issues.

Mr. Anderson received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1980 and a master of law degree in taxation from New York University School of Law in 1982. * Incorporation and 501(c) 3 status
* Personnel/payroll- for example: how to legally pay your custodian for funerals and weddings
* Pensions and other employee benefits
* Acceptable use of contributions collected – for example: you accept offerings for Easter lilies – must you use it all on Easter lilies?
* Receipts for tax purposes
* "Sunsetting" of funds
* Best accounting practices - how often should we have independent audits, financial reviews?
* How long should we keep documents around in a church office?  Make sure to bring your questions!

Nurturing our World

Church on Earth, Grounding Your Ministry in a Sense of Place
Authors: Jeff Wild and Peter Bakken
What other church is there besides institutional? Fredrick von Hugel said the institution of the church is like the bark on the tree. There's no life in the bark. It's dead wood. But it protects the life of the tree within. And the tree grows and grows and grows and grows. If you take the bark off, it's prone to disease, dehydration, death. So yes, the church is dead but it protects something alive. And when you have a church without bark, it doesn't last long. It disappears, gets sick and it's prone to all kinds of disease, heresy, and narcissism. - Eugene Peterson

Church on Earth is an effort to examine the tree's roots and calls for an analysis of the soil that anchors the tree in its place. Just as nutrients in the soil feed the roots of a tree and the roots hold the soil in place, there is a symbiotic relationship between a congregation and the place where it is located. Every congregation, though similar to other trees in the woods or orchard, has a unique identity shaped in part by its understanding of and relationship to
the place where it is planted to carry forth its mission.

Church on Earth is a biblical and theological reflection contextualized in a place called Madison Christian Community (MCC). Located on the west side of Madison, Wisconsin, MCC was founded during a time when leaders of Christian denominations were seriously engaged in ecumenical discussion. 2008 is the fortieth anniversary of Community of Hope, United Church of Christ, and Advent Lutheran, ELCA, congregations from two denominations who continue living out this vision through the shared ministry that is MCC.

Jeff Wild, an ELCA pastor, serves as one of the pastors at MCC. He grew up in Beaver Dam and has served congregations in Racine and Janesville. He wrote Discovering a Place Again for the First Time while on a sabbatical in 2006.

Peter Bakken is Coordinator for Public Policy at the Wisconsin Council of Churches and is also a member of Advent and Madison Christian Community. He received his Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Chicago and edited the works of Joseph Sitler in a volume of Evocations of Grace. Peter is also a contributor to Earth and Word: Classic Sermons of Saving the Planet.

2009 UCCCOSSN Facts

What is the United Church of Christ Support Staff Network?
We are the Office Support Staff from local churches, conferences and national agencies and instrumentalities. We are the supporting hands at the end of the administrating arms of the on-going ministry of the United Church of Christ.

Our Purposes and Objectives
The Purpose of the United Church of Christ Office Support Staff Network is to help bring about dignity, respect, and fair compensation for all United Church of Christ Office Support Staff.

The Objectives are:
* To create a network of United Church of Christ Office Support Staff at all levels throughout the denomination.
* To raise the level of professionalism of United Church of Christ Office Support Staff
* To provide continuing education opportunities for United Church of Christ Office Support Staff.
* To provide opportunities for fellowship and sharing among peers.
* To raise the awareness of local churches, associations, conferences, national bodies - the denomination as a whole - of the vital role the contributions of United Church of Christ Office Support Staff

How did this all get started?
The first meeting of the United Church of Christ Office Support Staff Network took place in 1987 at Winter Park Florida. For many years the meetings of UCCOSSN were held and hosted by the Florida Conference and largely underwritten by that Conference. In 1994, conversation began around other locations. If the meeting were in other locations, more local church office support staff persons could participate. As a result, it was decided to plan ahead with meetings to be held in Cleveland at the national offices in non-Synod years (even numbered years). The alternate years the meeting would be hosted by different geographical areas.

If I want to attend, how do I convince my employer and find some financial support?
The first step is education. This is not a "vacation" trip. This is continuing education just as executives continue their education. Gathering and relaxing with SUPPORT STAFF from all over the country, from different, yet similar settings - comparing notes, ideas problems and experiences, are why this rewarding opportunity will enhance your ministry and the church you serve. Above all, you deserve it...you've earned it....and you will be a better and happier staff person for the experience.

Possibilities for creative funding:
* Lobby to get some money put in the budget for continuing education for support staff.
* Special gifts may be received from a mentor to cover the cost for a secretary of a local church.
* A special gift given for long time service in a local church or conference setting.

43. Mind of Peace Experiment

November 25, 2008

Center for International Studies, University of Missouri-St. Louis presents “The Mind of Peace Experiment”, a simulation of a potential Palestinian-Israel public assembly.

5 Israelis meet 5 Palestinians to discuss, debate, and negotiate different solutions to one of the most entrenched conflicts in the world. They have 5 formal sessions to reach a peace agreement. At the end of each formal session the audience will be allowed to comment, react and ask questions. The M.O.P. experiment is a unique exercise in peacemaking and conflict resolution. It is a simulation of a potential Palestinian-Israeli public assembly - a multi-party negotiating congress. The assembly is designed to involve the people in the peace process through provoking a public debate over central issues. The exercise intends to serve as a laboratory for evaluating possible outcomes of an official Palestinian-Israeli public assembly and its potential implications. Space is limited, reservations highly recommended. Parking permits are required on Wednesdays. For more information on this special program, to request your free parking permit and a campus map, and to reserve a seat, please visit this website www.cfis-umsl.com  or call 314-516-7299.
