 5.  October Parish Paper "Requirements for Membership: Which Ones Matter?"

October 1, 2008

Attached is the October issue of The Parish Paper, a two page newsletter edited by Herb Miller, Lyle Schaller, and Cynthia Woolever. Each edition will discuss issues, share ideas, or offer insights on an area of parish ministry. The October issue discusses: “Requirements for Membership: Which Ones Matter?”

Didn’t get the previous issues? Don’t know what The Parish Paper is? A statement from Jeff Whitman, Conference Minister can be found at www.mmsucc.org/resources/parishpaper.asp  as well as past issues.

How you will receive the Parish Paper: The October issue is attached to this email as a PDF. Some of you will get it, and some will not have anything attached because your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has blocked this attachment. Therefore, the Parish Paper is also available for you on the Conference Website www.mmsucc.org  Just look for the link to Resources, and the drop down menu will offer Parish Paper as an option. We will post future editions of the Parish Paper on the website as we get them.

Below are some additional instructions on the use of The Parish Paper:

Our organization's purchase of photocopy rights for The Parish Paper INCLUDES:
1. Permission to provide copies to our staff and the congregations within our constituency in any of the following ways: E-mail, U.S. Mail, newspaper, meetings, training events, and our Website.

2. Permission for each congregation within our constituency to (a) photocopy or electronically distribute for local use as many copies as it needs, (b) post them on its Website, and (c) quote sentences and paragraphs.

Your Congregation does NOT have permission (a) to delete the copyright notice on page 2; (b) to re-write, paraphrase, or change the wording of sentences and paragraphs; or (c) to give ANY THIRD PARTY - other than your staff and constituents - permission to photocopy or reprint (in any quantity, no matter how small, whether for free distribution or for sale).

If your congregation uses a U.S. Post Office Nonprofit Mailing Permit to distribute photocopies with its newsletter or other mailings, most local Post Offices require that every item carry your congregation's name and address. Above The Parish Paper masthead, type your congregation's name, address, and "Photocopied by Permission."

30. Results of the Steeple Ad are fantastic!

October 14, 2008

Dear Friends:
We have just completed our two week ad run of Steeples and the results are fantastic! Traffic to the main portal of the United Church of Christ increased 27 percent during the ad run and visitors to the "find a church" query page were up 29 percent. This same period saw 1,100 new users sign up to receive UCC email updates.
What's more, we've heard how thankful people are to know a church like the UCC exists:
• From Dot, "I saw (the ad) just a few days ago and was thrilled with it! In these days of such unrest and uncertainty, it centered me."
• From Adam, "I saw the ad and was really moved by it. I have located a church in my town and am very excited to reintroduce myself to God. Thank you so much. From one of the people…"
• From Jesse, "I love your ad on TV. I just saw it for the first time and… went on the internet to look up your views.… Thanks for really understanding and living the teachings of Christ."
• From John, "After seeing your "Steeple" ad on TV, I was curious to visit your website. As I sit here in tears, all I can say is WOW! As a gay man I thought that I would never find a church that would accept me for me."
• And finally from Tom, "Thank you. As it was for so many of us, this week has been hard. I came home so desperate looking for answers and wondering how we, both individually and as a country, could survive. As I sat mulling in my own depression, I saw your message on television that spoke to my heart about the need for understanding and inclusion. Now, more than ever, we need to hear that we are ALL God's children. Bless you--you made a difference in my life and I'm sure in so many others."
What feedback have you heard? Please share it with us by replying to this email or visiting the Steeples Feedback page.
Peace, grace and many thanks for all you have done to support this ad campaign,

The Rev. Felix Carrion, Coordinator                    Gwen Thomas, Assistant Coordinator

37. St. Peter's, Washington hosts lecture by Dr. Patterson

October 16, 2008

Stephen J. Patterson, Professor of New Testament at Eden Theological Seminary, will speak on Friday, October 31, 9-10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s in Washington.

His lecture will be on “Christian Origins and Christian Faith.” Before there was a church, before the great ecumenical councils and creeds, before Jerome, Aquinas or Luther, there was a small band of Jesus followers who set out to follow in the footsteps of their slain hero and leader, Jesus of Nazareth. The Jesus movement. What was the Jesus movement like? What did those first Jesus people think they were doing, and why? These are the questions of Christian origins. Today scholars are formulating answers to these questions that are sometimes quite surprising. But what do these new ideas about the origins of our faith have to do with the way we understand our faith and try to put it into practice? What does Christian origins have to do with Christian faith?

Dr. Patterson’s teaching and writing focus is on the New Testament and Christian origins. “I am particularly drawn to those aspects of our origins that are least understood - the mysteries and unresolved questions of how Christianity began.” Dr. Patterson hopes to inspire in his students this same sort of curiosity. “I try to get students to pay attention to those aspects of the text that they least understand. In these gaps of understanding, there usually lurks a whole new way of seeing the text. New worlds of understanding are opened up.”

The public is invited. Call Rev. Dr. Paul Koch at St. Peter’s for more information at 636-239-6176. There is no charge.

October 22, 2008

Church-Wide Surveys Addressing Sexual Abuse and Violence now Online!

UCC members and authorized ministers and youth leaders are encouraged to take one of the online surveys now available as part of a needs assessment for our churches.

In collaboration with the FaithTrust Institute, Justice & Witness Ministries and other partners in the national setting are conducting a needs assessment of the experiences and training of UCC members and leaders. There are three versions of a survey posted online at http://www.ucc.org/justice/survey.html  One survey is geared for teenagers and college-aged young adults; a second for adult UCC members 23 years and older; and a third for authorized ministers and youth leaders.

Questions are asked about childhood experiences with familial sexual and physical violence or abuse as well as inappropriate clergy or youth leader behaviors. The Leaders survey asks about training received and/or needed to be effective in dealing with church members who have experienced sexual violence, intimate partner violence, or other forms of abuse.

The surveys will be online through the end of October and the information then used to help assess what kinds of resources and training opportunities are needed to address the actual experiences of our members and to develop advocacy tools to end sexual and domestic violence.

Printed copies of the surveys are available by contacting: Rev. Loey Powell (1-866-822-8224 x3715) or powelll@ucc.org

IRS overhauls Form 990 for first time since ’80s

Nonprofit organizations — from the national charities that raise big money for causes such as cancer, to private country clubs, to neighborhood Catholic churches with schools and bingo nights — face new Internal Revenue Service reporting requirements this year.

For the first time in almost 30 years, the IRS has overhauled its Form 990, the primary information statement that nonprofits are required to submit every tax year.

For the nonprofits, it means getting used to a new format, devoting more time to it, and the likelihood of paying higher preparation costs.

52. National Donor Sabbath Observance - November 14-16, 2008

October 22, 2008

National Donor Sabbath Observance – November 14-16, 2008

National Donor Sabbath brings together religious and transplant communities to raise awareness of the urgent need for organ and tissue donors and to dispel fears about the incompatibility of religion and donation. Every major religion in the United States supports organ and tissue donation as one of the highest expressions of compassion and generosity. It is unlikely, however, that most people have heard their religious leaders speak out about this critical issue.

Gift of Life Donor Program, with support from the area transplant community, participated in National Donor Sabbath Weekend this year by holding a prayer breakfast and by garnering the participation of dozens of local houses of worship. For materials and resources go to: www.donors1.org

NEW UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST COVENANT & POLITY RESOURCES

What Matters to You? Matters to Us by Sidney D. Fowler
This book provides essential reflections on core themes of the UCC, while inviting new and long-standing members alike to consider their own identity and faith formation. Six central themes invite engagement: 1. We are people of God’s extravagant welcome, 2. We belong to Christ, 3. We are a people of covenant, a united and uniting church, 4. We are one at baptism and the table, 5. We thank God by working for a just and loving world, and 6. We listen for the still-speaking God. A seventh chapter offers historical examples. Available for $6.40 through United Church Press at www.unitedchurchpress.com  (a free study guide is also available on the web-site.)

Covenant: A Study for the United Church of Christ by Jane Fisler Hoffman
This book, in light of the fractures within the UCC, encourages its members to have meaningful discussions about the word “covenant”. It is Fisler Hoffman’s (a Missouri native) hope that her resource will bring people together around this one word and show that, even with a diversity of views, people have more things in common than not in common. Contains nine thought-provoking sessions that explore the concept of covenant as it relates to : the Hebrew Testament, Jesus Christ, God, our UCC heritage, the wider UCC, autonomy and more. Available for $6.40 through United Church Press at www.unitedchurchpress.com.

UCC Polity Website with information gathered by Barbara Brown Zikmund
Available on-line at http://www.ucc.org/education/polity/  is a library of resources around UCC history, UCC theology, UCC polity, UCC ministry, and ethos of the UCC. The statewide festival is organized by Christian churches that collect quilts, food and supplies; the quilts are auctioned to raise money for the poor and food, health, and educational supplies are distributed to local and international agencies.

Special guest minister for the celebration will be The Rev. Cleo Kottwitz, retired United Methodist pastor. Rev. Kottwitz has long been active in the Festival of Sharing and his experience as a pastor in rural Missouri makes him uniquely qualified to share stories from our heartland. He is also the former Regional Coordinator for Heifer International and helped establish the Town and Country Ministries at Saint Paul School of Theology. Rev. Kottwitz now makes his home near Columbia.

The harvest celebration will include a display of quilts that were donated to the Festival of Sharing. Favorite harvest and thanksgiving hymns will be sung, and there will be refreshments. There is no charge for the celebration, however, if you are able, you are invited to bring a non-perishable item for the food pantry.

For more information on November’s “Miracles in Missouri” please call 816-254-3500. The Groves is located at 1515 W. White Oak (Truman Road at Forest Ave.) in Independence, MO, near the Truman Heritage District.
