18. Western Association Fall Fellowship Rally

September 10, 2008

You are invited to gather as the Western Association of the Missouri Mid-South Conference, United Church of Christ for a Fall Fellowship Rally on Saturday, September 27th from 9 am until 3 pm at Country Club Congregational UCC in Kansas City, Missouri!

The theme for our gathering is “I love my church because…” The rally will be a day of fun and celebration as we lift up the many gifts and ministries that God has established within the faith communities of our Association. In addition, we will acknowledge and reaffirm the covenantal relationship that draws and holds us together as a united Church. We will worship, create, sing, play, and eat together while sharing stories that complete the phrase “I love my church because…”

In addition to encouraging members and friends of your congregation to join us at the rally, there are a few pre-rally activities in which you are asked to engage:

1.) Invite individual members and friends of your congregation to play with the phrase “I love my church because…” before this gathering. You could extend this invitation in your congregation’s newsletter, during the announcements in worship, in a specific sermon, or perhaps a special gathering of your congregation. Folks attending the rally will be encouraged to share their thoughts and responses with people from other congregations in Western Association.

2.) As a congregation, complete the phrase “We love our church because…” as a way of introducing your community to the other congregations in the Western Association. Then, take or select a photograph that reflects or matches this statement and send it to Country Club Congregational Church. Electronic photographs may be sent to mail@cccucc.com  Hard-copy photographs may be sent to 205 West 65th Street, Kansas City, MO 64106. Please send BOTH your photograph AND your introductory phrase at the same time. We will compile the pictures and statements into an electronic presentation to share with the Association. If we receive submissions from everyone before the rally, copies of the presentation will be available for you to take home and share with your community. Please send your contributions to us by September 19th.

3.) As a congregation, identify your community’s favorite hymn. Please send the title of your congregation’s favorite hymn to Country Club Congregational Church either via email at mail@cccucc.com or via telephone at 816-523-4813. Please send your hymn title to us by September 19th.

4.) As a congregation, identify your community’s favorite/best dessert and bring it with you to the rally. Dessert after lunch will be a buffet of church favorites – doggie bags will be available!

5.) Encourage those attending the rally to come up with a way to show everyone that they are from the same congregation. For example, silly buttons, funny hats, matching t-shirts, goofy sunglasses, etc. Be creative and have fun!

6.) Invite your youth to attend the rally and, as a group, be prepared to share a story of something they love about your church. For example, the youth from this congregation will share about their experience at this year’s National Youth Event. These stories will be offered during our luncheon together.

Remember, reservations are requested by September 19th and should be made through the Missouri Mid-South Conference office at 877-877-5884 or 314-962-8740. See you in a few weeks!

21. UCC Launches 2008 Hurricane Recovery appeal

September 10, 2008

UCC Launches 2008 Hurricane Recovery appeal for $250,000 and one-thousand-one Clean Up Buckets.

September 9, 2008 - Today the United Church of Christ issued an appeal for $250,000 and 1001 Clean Up Buckets to support emergency and long term relief and rebuilding efforts necessitated by the destructive 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Hurricanes Fay, Gustav, and Ike, as well as Tropical Storm Hanna have left a trail of death and destruction across the nations of the Caribbean, throughout Florida and across the Gulf Coast of the United States.

UCC RESPONSE
One Great Hour of Sharing emergency response grants have been rushed to Church World Service and partners in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica to support immediate response efforts. Your generous donation to the 2008 Hurricane Recovery appeal will enable the UCC to offer even greater support for emergency response and long term relief and rehabilitation. Personal protection equipment is being sent to the UCC Florida Conference for volunteers and homeowners to use as they clean up damaged homes filled with mold. UCC national and international disaster response staff is in regular contact with impacted Conferences and partners offering prayers, assistance and support in this stressful time.

What you can do:
1. Pray for people who live in communities affected by tropical storms and hurricanes.
2. Make a generous Secure On-line Donation on the UCC Web Site @ucc.org or by using the donate button on our Missouri Mid-South Web Site, check “Other” and indicate Hurricane Relief Fund. Let’s make our goal of $250,000!
If you prefer to write a check, send gifts payable to your congregation marked for “2008 Hurricane Recovery” with the request they be sent through your Conference office on to Wider Church Ministries, Financial Services - 6th Floor, 700 Prospect Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44115. Gifts payable to Wider Church Ministries may be sent directly to the previous address.
3. Create a Church World Service Clean Up Bucket. Help us reach the UCC goal of 1001 buckets.
4. Gather a Disaster Recovery Mission Trip Group.

SITUATION
Hurricanes Fay, Gustav, and Ike, as well as Tropical Storm Hanna have left a trail of death and destruction across the nations of the Caribbean, throughout Florida and across the Gulf Coast of the United States. Due to the ongoing nature of these storms, damage assessment is still taking place. Here is what is known so far:
HAITI - the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere has been pummeled by each of the storms. Over 300 deaths have been reported. Flooding in Gonaives, Haiti’s 4th largest city has washed out all land routes. Thousands of residents have had neither clean water nor anything to eat for several days. House of Hope, a UCC partner near Port-au-Prince, lost its portside building and all food and resources used in its education program for working children. UCC/CWS partners are providing shelter and bottled water throughout Haiti. CWS is prepared to airlift blankets and hygiene kits.
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – At least 5,000 persons were evacuated in northern DR due to flooding caused by rains. Flooding from the Yaque River caused significant damage to crops. Long time UCC/CWS partner Servicio Social de Iglesias Dominicanas (SSID) is providing emergency assistance of food and shelter materials to impacted communities and will assist with crop restoration.
JAMAICA - has suffered significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture from the recent storms. United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, our partner, is making plans to assist peasant farmers in replanting their crops.
CUBA - Hurricane Gustav left 100,000 people homeless. The full extent of damage from Hurricane Ike is yet to be know, but appears to be quite extensive. Church World Service is awaiting word from the Cuban Council of Churches. CWS has special permission from the US Government to ship material supplies to Cuba.
UNITED STATES:
Hurricane Fay made landfall in Florida a record four times, causing at least 13 deaths and damaging more than 1,000 homes. Thankfully, New Orleans experienced a successful evacuation and did not receive a direct hit from Hurricane Gustav. Many other communities in Mississippi and Louisiana, however, experienced significant wind damage and extensive flooding. The community of Baton Rouge, Louisiana was particularly hard hit, as was the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Community.
UCC colleagues in Biloxi, Mississippi, report several homes which were re-built in Harrison and Hancock counties following Hurricane Katrina experienced flooding from Gustav’s storm surge. Many fishing boats were damaged; which is a real blow to this industry which was just recovering following Hurricane Katrina.
Tropical Storm Hanna moved quickly up the eastern seaboard, bringing significant rainfall but not the extensive flooding which had been feared.
U.S. communities along the Gulf Coast are keeping a watchful eye on Hurricane Ike as it churns across the Caribbean. Ike is projected to enter the Gulf of Mexico and make landfall later this week.
Please keep all the people impacted by hurricanes and tropical storms in your prayers and plan to make a generous donation to the 2008 Hurricane Recovery appeal.

27. UCC/DOC Global Ministry partners, Patrick & Kimberly Bentrott in St. Louis

September 11, 2008

Patrick and Kimberly Bentrott will be in St. Louis next week-end! Members of Disciples and UCC congregations will be able to hear and see first-hand these servants of the Church who have committed themselves to ministry in Haiti on our behalf. As commissioned Global Ministries partners, the Bentrotts will begin their ministries near the end of October. Patrick will be working with pastors and lay leaders, while Kimberly will work in training health agents in local congregations. Haiti is known as one of the most economically deprived countries in the world. An ecumenical coalition of churches there is trying to respond to the desperate needs of the Haitian people and have specifically asked for the kind of ministerial and medical leadership that Kimberly and Patrick are most able to provide.

On Sunday, September 14th at 2:30 pm, at Webster Groves Christian Church (1320 Lockwood Avenue) we will have an opportunity to meet the Bentrotts and hear about their anticipations, hopes and fears. Although they have yet to travel to Haiti, they will certainly be able to share what they know already and treat us to a first-hand look at what they might be doing in mission. This will also be the opportunity for us to develop a support and information system with them as they venture into the next four years.

Please bring a car full of members of your congregation! This will be a joyous day for members of the United Church of Christ and the Disciples of Christ as we celebrate our partnership and joint ministries. If you have questions about the gathering, please call the Rev. Jeff Moore, Senior Minister, Webster Groves Christian Church (314.961.3232) for more information.

28. Urgent Need for Church World Service Kits

September 11, 2008

Church world service is in need of Emergency Clean-up kits, Baby Layettes and Hygiene kits.

"These last two weeks have seen us receiving an incredible number of urgent requests for kits and blankets. As such, our kit inventory is rapidly depleting and perilously low given that we anticipate many further requests over coming weeks. …This week alone we've had requests from Haiti for blankets, baby kits and hygiene kits; Louisiana for baby kits, clean-up buckets and hygiene kits; Texas for blankets, clean-up buckets. As such, with these requests in the process of being met, our inventory now stands at:
22,000 hygiene kits
0 clean-up buckets
200 baby kits
"We are already aware that [as] assessments are completed in coming days, we'll be getting material resource requests from Cuba and probably other areas of the Caribbean... which we'll have a hard time in honoring given current inventory." From Donna Derr, Director, Emergency Response Program Church World Service.

The Emergency Clean up kits that were sent to the Festival of Sharing office have been sent to Hammond Louisiana in response to hurricane Gustav clean up. Please continue to make Emergency clean up kits as well as baby layette kits and personal hygiene kits. If you have any questions feel free to contact Terri Williams, Festival of Sharing Coordinator at 573-474-3332 or by email at festival@socket.net

The only way we can make this happen is with assistance from all of our wonderful churches. We are asking the St. Louis and Western Association churches to contribute snack foods and INDIVIDUAL (this is a change from the 2 liter bottles we've done in the past but people have been asking for something they can pick up and go with) sodas/bottles of water. The Eastern Association churches are being asked to contribute breakfast items such as coffee cakes, muffins and fresh fruit. All churches are welcome to send cookies. Jane Porchey is the coordinator of this effort and you can contact her to make a pledge of items from your church at 314-961-0283 or email her at jporchey@earthlink.net

58. UCC's "Connecting Threads" documentary to air on NBC TV

September 25, 2008

In this age of natural disasters and injustice, it’s refreshing to be reminded that ordinary people still can make a difference in the world. That reminder comes in the form of a new documentary called “Connecting Threads.”

The video is the latest documentary produced by the United Church of Christ, the Interfaith Broadcasting Commission and the National Council of Churches. It will debut on NBC TV stations nationwide starting on Oct. 5, 2008.

“Connecting Threads” shows viewers how ordinary people are sharing their talents and time to work with others for a better world.

“It's not often that we have an opportunity to take a trip around the world in less than an hour,” says the Rev. J. Bennett Guess, head of the UCC’s communication department. “'Connecting Threads' enables viewers to experience diverse people, landscapes and religious perspectives; while being reminded that the Christian faith is global in its reach and inclusive in its mission."

The documentary takes viewers to Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Southern Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, and the Middle East and Europe. “Watching ‘Connecting Threads’ brings the voices and lives of our global neighbor’s right into our homes and hearts,.” says Jan Aerie, a spokesperson for Global Ministries, a shared world ministry partnership of the UCC and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). In 2007, Global Ministries had a total of 147 missionaries served in 44 countries.

The United Church of Christ's national broadcast of the Steeples commercial begins this Monday (9/29) and we want YOU to watch.

TV Schedule
We have secured the viewing schedule for our two week run. The nutshell?
• Watch BET, BRAVO, CNN and TV One between Monday 9/29 and Sunday 10/12. More specifics are posted at this link and will be updated throughout the run. www.ucc.org/allthepeople/TV-schedule.html

• The ad will make 22 million viewing "impressions" - that translates to approximately 12-15 million different individuals seeing the United Church of Christ's message of extravagant welcome, unity and hope.

• More than 60% of our timeslots are prime time, an extraordinarily high percentage given the relatively small amount of our total purchase!.

Spiritual Resources
We wouldn't ask you to flip the remote without also bolstering your spirit! We have gathered an array of spiritual reflections on the theme of All the People that we invite you to read during the next two weeks. They provide a powerful theological grounding for the message we will be broadcasting to millions. To find these reflections, follow the link above to the schedule and look on the left Section Menu for “Spiritual Reflections on All the People.”

Our many, many thanks for your support of this messaging effort. Together, we will let millions of people know that there is a home for them in the United Church of Christ.

Blessings,
The Rev. John H. Thomas The Rev. Felix Carrion
General Minister and President Stillspeaking Ministry Coordinator
