5. Current immigration laws
February 2, 2009
A note from Rev. David Poe, pastor of St. Peter’s UCC in New Haven:
ADVOCACY FOR NOE (NOAH) GUZMAN
I have been providing pastoral support to Noe (Noah) Guzman, a
senior at New Haven High School, as he fights deportation to Mexico.
I invite you to read the article that appeared in Sunday’s St. Louis
Post-Dispatch (January 25, 2009).
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/columnists.nsf/billmcclellan/story/67A8FC9FF914EE9986257548001C4190?OpenDocument
Current immigration laws make no distinctions for children of
illegal immigrants who grow up in the United States thinking they
are here legally only to discover their true status when they
sign-up for the military, apply for college, or seek employment
opportunities. In Noe’s case, he showed up at a Marine recruiter’s
office and was handcuffed, shackled, and then threatened with
deportation for a violation he did not knowingly commit.
Families are being divided and lives ruined by this unjust policy.
Noe faces voluntary deportation and restrictions that may keep him
from ever entering the United States again. He has lived in the
United States since he was four years old. Yet, he will be forced to
cross the border into Mexico and survive without family, friends,
and perhaps even a High School diploma.
Please communicate your support for Noe Guzman by contacting the
following state and congressional leaders to sponsor a bill to allow
Noe to stay in the United States.
(I recommend that you do all three: call, write, AND email your
support!) Thank you.

11. A Pastoral Letter about
Immigration Laws
February 4, 2009
A message from Rev. David Poe: Please use the following pastoral
letter in your upcoming newsletters, bulletins, email
communications, and post on your websites. I am convinced the more
voices that join this effort the better chance our elected leaders
will listen to the plight of children like Noe. Once again, I thank
you for joining me in this effort. God bless you. David
The judge in Noe Guzman’s case granted an extension until March 10,
2009. Read about Noe’s story in Bill McClellan’s January 25, 2009
article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. I have decided to write this
letter to ask your readers for their support in advocating for Noe.
Once I learned that Noe did not have legal counsel, I contacted my
Conference Minister, Rev. Jeff Whitman of the Missouri Mid-South
Conference of the United Church of Christ. He put us in touch with
Katie Herbert Meyer, Legal Director for Interfaith Legal Services
for Immigrants. Katie has been a tremendous blessing. She continues
exploring various legal avenues available to Noe, while also
preparing him for the possibility of deportation.
I became involved because Noe is my son’s best friend. Tyler and Noe
began their friendship almost as soon as we moved to New Haven in
the spring of 2005. Both are members of the New Haven High School
cross-country team and track team. Over the years, Noe has been a
frequent guest in our house. My twins, Tyler and Miranda, are in the
same class as Noe. Tyler and Miranda are finishing up their visits
to college campuses, applying for financial aid, and getting ready
for the best times of their lives. But Noe is forced to think about
going to Mexico, a place where he hasn’t lived since he was four
years old. He has to think about whether or not his outstanding
academic record will mean anything. How will he make a living in a
land that is foreign to him? In May, my son and daughter will walk
across the stage and receive their high school diplomas. Noe should
have the same opportunity. If Noe is deported, then it will be like
having one of my own kids taken away from me.
Noe is a leader among his peers. He has an outstanding record of
academics. He has taken the lead in contacting elected leaders such
as Missouri House Representative, Charlie Schlottach, who has
provided significant support. He is also attempting to speak with
U.S. Senators Claire McCaskill and Kit Bond, along with U.S. House
of Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer. I am confident these elected
leaders will lead the way in providing a compassionate solution to
Noe’s dilemma.
New Haven is a great small community. The people here care about
each other and are trying to do as much as they can to support Noe’s
efforts to stay. For example, Sandy Bockting has provided
transportation to every court appearance and even helped provide
financial assistance for Noe’s legal representation. Students for
New Haven High School accompanied Noe to his December court
appearance to give their support. Church members and others are
writing, calling, and emailing our elected leaders urging them to
pass a special bill for Noe.
I serve as the pastor of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, New
Haven. The sanctuary has a stained glass window depicting Jesus
welcoming the little children into his arms. It continues to remind
me of my calling as an ordained minister to speak the truth in love.
Friends, I believe the greatest strength of our nation is its
willingness to open its arms to the children of the world. But when
adults erect too many walls, then it becomes hard to see the
children.
I don’t have the answer to immigration reform in this country. I’ll
leave that to Kit Bond, Claire McCaskel, and Blaine Luetkemeyer to
figure out. All I know is that Noe is my neighbor, a child of God. I
will tell his story. I will pray for his citizenship. I will work to
knock down walls that penalize children for the actions of their
parents. Please tell our elected leaders it’s time for a change—it’s
time for us to respond on behalf of our neighbors—and it should
start with a young man named Noe Guzman.

Groves Hosts Drama
February 17, 2009
"A Dramatization of the Life of Francis of Assisi" by Jim McGinnis
will be presented at 3 PM on Saturday, February 21, at Evangelical
UCC, 204 E. Lockwood Ave in Webster Groves. This one-hour
interactive interpretation of the core message of Sts Francis and
Clare focuses on Francis as a "fool for Christ" and challenges
participants to examine their own commitment to a simple life-style,
peacemaking, compassion for the "least" of God's children, care for
creation, and courageous love. Followed by some reflection and
discussion, this 90-minute experience is open to students and
faculty at Eden Seminary and the wider community. Jim is especially
interested in finding and working with some seminary students who
would like to explore this way of interpreting the Gospel and clown
ministry in general.

34. A chance to help Noe
Guzman
February 17, 2009
A request from Rev. David Poe: You asked if there was anything you
can do to help Noe Guzman. Well, here’s your chance to help!
Noe Guzman’s attorney spoke with a US Immigration and Customs
Enforcement’s (ICE) attorney who said they (ICE) would CONSIDER a
formal request to exercise prosecutorial discretion in Noe’s case.
An exercise of prosecutorial discretion would likely mean that ICE
would dismiss the immigration charges against Noe. It would NOT give
him any formal status, and would NOT guarantee he would not be
placed in removal proceedings again in the future. But, it could buy
him some time. Noe’s attorney must put a request in writing and
attach any and all supporting documents. She will include Rep.
Schlottach’s letter and any other letters of support she receives on
behalf of Noe.
Here’s how you can help.
Write a support letter addressed “To Whom It May Concern”. Fax,
e-mail or mail the SIGNED letter to:
Katie Herbert Meyer, Esq.
Legal Director
Interfaith Legal Services for Immigrants
4158 Lindell Boulevard
Saint Louis, MO 63108
Fax: (314) 371-4766
Please keep in mind that if you e-mail the letter, it MUST show a
signature.
Ms. Meyer will be sending the formal request packet to ICE this
FRIDAY, February 20, 2009, so if you place your letter in the mail,
you may want to use express mail.
Please be sure Ms. Meyer receives your letter before the 20th!
Feel free to contact Rep. Schlottach’s office if you have any
questions.

41. Don't throw out that
old yarn...
February 20, 2009
Spring Cleaning ...Early?
We all know what they say about the road to hell being paved with
good intentions.... If you have a stockpile of yarn you have always
meant to use, you were going to get around to crocheting with, etc.,
this is your opportunity to clear it out without throwing it away.
Bethesda Hospice Care volunteers make lap robes for our patients,
and would be happy to help use up your extra or leftover yarn. If
you have some you want to get out of your way, and if you would like
to help a good cause in the process, please call Leslie Simon at
314-446-0623. Thanks.

51. Immerse Yourself in
Prayer - General Synod project
February 27, 2009
Attached are two documents that we hope you’ll pass on to your
congregations:
The first is a
brief description of the “Immerse Yourself in Prayer” project
for General Synod, an opportunity for congregations and their
quilters/seamstresses to make a candle cloth, create a prayer, and
exchange them at General Synod this summer. The second form is the
Covenant or
registration form for the project.
Each contributing congregation will end up with a sister
congregation as a prayer partner in the UCC, plus will bring home
from Synod a hand-made, small quilt (the “candle cloth”, simply a
mini-quilt, approximately 14”-20” square, intended for use under a
candle to create sacred space) and a booklet of prayers for
devotional use personally and during church gatherings. The candle
cloths will be displayed at General Synod and all who view them will
receive a booklet of the created prayers.
This project should be both fun and prayerful, so you’re invited to
share this information as widely and in as many ways as possible.
For more information, please feel free to email or call Susan
Towner-Larsen, Minister for Conference Relations, Phone:
216-736-2190 Fax: 216-736-2103

54. Heart to Help Potluck
Brunch Benefits Emmaus Homes
February 27, 2009
Heart to Help Potluck Brunch on Saturday, May 2, 2009 from 11:00
a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ, 405 South
Fifth Street, St. Charles
Emmaus Homes has a heart to help adults with developmental
disabilities live in safe, comfortable homes and enjoy life to its
fullest. A mission of the UCC’s Council for Health & Human Service
Ministries, Emmaus provides campus residences, community homes,
recreation and senior services to nearly 300 individuals in the St.
Louis area. We know women in our community have a heart to help, as
well. That’s why we’re gathering area church women together for the
“heart to help potluck brunch.”
Bring your favorite brunch dish, share ideas from your women’s group
and learn from others, all while relaxing, eating, laughing and
learning about Emmaus Homes and the people we serve.
Please RSVP to
potluck@emmaushomes.org or call 636.534.5213. For more
information, contact Gabrielle Ballard at 636-534-5214 or
ballardg@emmaushomes.org
A free-will offering will be collected to benefit the men and women
with developmental disabilities served by Emmaus. ($15 suggested
donation - the cost of brunch with friends at a restaurant).
Don’t forget to invite your friends!

55. Important Message for
Eastern Association Pastors & Key Lay Leaders
February 27, 2009
EASTERN ASSOCIATION PASTORS & KEY LAY LEADERS….
You are invited to Round Two of the Habakkuk Project Cluster
Conversations
for the development of a Strategic Plan for the Missouri Mid-South
Conference
Your input is needed….
The Strategic Planning Working Group of the Habakkuk Project is
sponsoring a series of conversations around the Conference to
continue the process of developing a Strategic Plan to be affirmed
by the Conference at its business meeting in October, 2009.
A set of Issue Areas arose from the first round of conversations and
was presented to the Conference at Faith Works last October 2008. We
are now seeking to identify the Vision and the Values which these
Issue Areas evoke for the membership of the wider Church.
These Visions and Values will inform a part of the plan which will
be presented for discussion at Round Three of the conversations to
happen this summer. For more information go to http://mmsc.netcipia.net
Please be sure your perspective is represented by attending one of
the following gatherings:
Thursday, March 5, 7pm at St. John UCC, Cappeln
Monday, March 23, 7pm at Grace UCC, O’Fallon
Thursday, March 26, 7pm at St. John UCC, Casco/Leslie
